Mexico City, México. March 20th, 2019.— Mexico is the main exporter of beer and the fourth producer worldwide, with 110 million hectoliters of beer produced per year. As such, reducing the consumption of water and energy in its preparation is one of the main goals of the sector.
Water is one of the key ingredients used in beer production, accounting for 85-92% of its composition. Beer brewing is also a very water intensive process, requiring anywhere from 3 to 5 liters of water to produce just one liter of beer. With the right technology and solutions in place, substantial water, energy and cost savings can be achieved, while ensuring the final product passes all hygiene tests and is produced in a sustainable manner.
"At one Ecolab brewery customer, the steam generation system is responsible for supplying the production process and generating steam for the electric power turbines," said Jesus Riezco, Nalco Water Light leader at Ecolab Mexico, speaking about specific parts of the process that use water. This brewery produces 4.6 million hectoliters of beer per year or about 4 percent of the national total.
Reducing water and energy consumption requires technological innovation and adequate solutions for each stage of production. For example, "to keep equipment in optimal operation, the dosing of treatment products needed to be done inside the boiler, so that it was not possible to verify the concentrations or adjust them according to the variables in the process," said Jesus.
To meet these demands, Nalco Water’s NexGuard ™ for boilers program was implemented (https://bit.ly/2FzVe8x). This program manages the dispersion of the hardness of the salts that can cause incrustations, keeping them soluble without precipitating the sediments and decreasing the purge.
"Just 2.5 months after the start of the program, the consumption of replacement water was significantly reduced and there was an optimization of the fuel consumption system, reducing total cost of the operation and improving environmental performance," Riezco said.
Ecolab helped this customer save 4660 m3 of replacement water per year, equivalent to $9,074 dollars; 14,614,372 MJ/year or $73,071 dollars for each 0.0005/MJ; and reduce CO2 emissions by 803 tons/year, resulting in extra annual savings of $4,577 dollars.
