Mexico City, October 13, 2017 - Every year, 1.4 million children do not live to celebrate their fifth birthday because of diarrhea and pneumonia. Handwashing with soap is one of the most effective ways to prevent these diseases and 200 others, including influenza, pneumonia, whooping cough and bronchitis. This simple behavior can save 8 million lives every year, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).
In partnership with the Project WET Foundation, Ecolab, the world leader in water, hygiene and energy technologies, has developed the Clean and Conserve Education Program, an interactive curriculum designed to teach youth about water conservation and healthy hygiene practices – including proper handwashing.
As part of Ecolab’s mission to create a cleaner, safer and healthier world, and in recognition of Global Handwashing Day on 15 October, Ecolab conducted educational workshops at elementary, middle and high schools throughout Latin America on the proper handwashing technique to eliminate most disease-causing pathogens. In Chile, Costa Rica, Colombia, Venezuela and Guatemala, the program reached more than 150 children. In Mexico, more than 200 students in the States of Mexico and Monterrey benefited from the training.
Since launching the program two years ago, Ecolab and Project WET have created awareness about the importance of disease prevention through proper handwashing for more than 200,000 students in Latin America. As part of the interactive curriculum, Ecolab volunteers teach the students five easy steps for proper handwashing:
To amplify the learning, teachers receive a complete instructional booklet that they can use to train students in other classrooms, and students receive a book to take home to share the learning with family members.
